3 Basic Tips to Alleviate the Symptoms of GERD

Experiencing heartburn is no small deal—in fact, the pain can be excessively bothersome that it can impede your daily life. While staving off one episode is manageable, contracting it regularly is completely another. This condition, known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, means you are regularly racked with the pains of heartburn.

If you have recently been diagnosed with GERD, then you might think that you will be plagued with the condition for the rest of your life. While this condition is considered a chronic one, the good news is that there are many ways you can control the symptoms to allow you to continue enjoying life to the fullest. 

Here are three major tips you can follow to alleviate the symptoms of GERD and help you keep going with your daily life:

1. Don’t rush your meals

When you eat, your stomach fills up. This causes it to sends chemical messages to your brain, telling you when it is full. However, what happens if you eat too fast? Because these chemical messages take time to reach your brain, sometimes, by the time your brain knows you are full, you had already overeaten! This puts a lot of pressure on your stomach, which then results to an episode of heartburn.

With that in mind, try to take your time when you eat. If you are trying to lose weight, this can be extremely beneficial, as you actually end up eating less!

2. Stop drinking or smoking

Both smoking and drinking can cause heartburn because of the ill effects that each brings to your body.

When it comes to smoking, the esophagus gets irritated, imitating the sensation of heartburn. It also triggers your stomach to produce more digestive acids and reduces your saliva production. Unknown to most, saliva actually neutralizes acids, which could actually help stave off the symptoms of heartburn.

For alcohol consumption, on the other hand, it hits similarly to how smoking effects your body: it promotes the production of stomach acids. However, rather than reducing saliva production, it relaxes your lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES’s job is to stop stomach contents from flowing back up your esophagus—but when that’s relaxed, contents are free to go up!

Not only will stopping these two habits reduce GERD symptoms significantly, but help you avoid a myriad of other diseases related to the habits themselves.

3. Eat multiple small meals

Rather than eating the three large meals that most people are accustomed to, it’s actually better to divide them into multiple smaller ones instead. The main benefit of this is that your stomach will not end up becoming too full, which places less pressure on your stomach. 

By eating more often, you get to avoid overfilling your stomach, while avoiding the burning sensation of hunger. This keeps you from going hungry while still gaining the amount of nutrition needed to keep your body healthy.
