Does Apple Cider Vinegar Actually Help Treat Heartburn?

For many people, the cause of heartburn is the intake of acidic food items like lemons, oranges, and the like. However, many people claim that apple cider vinegar has helped ease their heartburn significantly. This may seem counterintuitive because apple cider vinegar is, well, acidic.

If you have heard of this tactic and are wondering whether it works, here is the answer: it does not. There is little to no evidence to suggest that it does, so it is usually better to avoid it entirely.

That being said, there are many other ways to manage heartburn, and we will share some of them with you in the sections below. But first, let us talk about heartburn and its cause.

What exactly is heartburn?

You may have experienced it before but did not know it was called heartburn: that burning sensation near your heart. This may sometimes happen when you eat certain types of food like chocolate or spicy dishes. 

What causes GERD?

There are many causes of GERD. Alcohol, such as red wine, is known to cause GERD. Other foods like citrus fruits, coffee, spicy foods can also trigger it. Regardless of the cause, GERD is a treatable disease, although leaving it to continue getting worse can lead to life-long problems.

That being said, heartburn happens when your lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxes too much, allowing contents from the stomach to travel back up. While it is normal for the LES to open up to allow food in and air out, gastric acid sometimes goes up instead and causes discomfort.

How do you address heartburn?

When it comes to treating heartburn, the best way is to use medication known as proton pump inhibitors. This kind of medication reduces the acidity of the stomach acids, leading to less irritation. While it will not treat GERD directly, it reduces the inflammation caused by stomach acids. In turn, this allows the esophagus to recover.

That being said, the downside to proton pump inhibitors is that they cause your body to absorb fewer nutrients. For this reason, you must not take them for more than a month unless told so by your doctor.

Fortunately, many DIY methods can help reduce heartburn to allow your esophagus to heal. For instance, rather than eating large meals that can overfill your stomach, eat smaller meals more often throughout the day. Also, avoiding food that are known triggers, like spicy or sour foods, will help immensely. 


As we have established earlier, apple cider vinegar, spicy foods, sour foods, and many other things, can cause heartburn. Fortunately, this means that an easy way for you to experience less heartburn is to avoid eating them. If you cannot avoid doing so, make sure to, at least, minimize your intake.
